The Church of Martin the Confessor

d. Arkhangelsk, Terekhina str., 75

Description:

Initially, the temple was founded as a stone cemetery church in the name of the Resurrection of Lazarus. But a few months later it was re-consecrated by Vladyka Eulampius in honor of St. Martin the Confessor, Pope of Rome. On the donations of Arkhangelsk and St. Petersburg merchants, the temple was expanded and decorated properly. Today, after reconstruction, the Church of St. Martin the Confessor looks the same as in the late nineteenth century during its heyday.

Today it is a small single-storey church with a bell tower adjacent to the west. The three-tiered iconostasis of St. Martin was presented by the merchant Dmitry Pochinkov. Its unusual even intricate form is a three-tiered ensemble with two semicircular arches. Painting the walls was made already in the XX century in the style of oil painting.

Icons and decoration of the church were given from many abandoned and closed churches of Arkhangelsk. The miraculous icon of the Assumption was given from the destroyed Assumption Church and thus survived and has survived to our days. Among other miracle-working icons is the myrrh-streaming image of the Mother of God “Swiftly Obedient”.
