Description:
St. John theological Sursky Monastery is an Orthodox women’s community. It was founded in the homeland of St. John of Kronstadt in the village of Sur in 1899. The initiator of the creation of the monastery was then Archpriest John Ilyich Sergiev, the future John of Kronstadt. In 1900, the community became a public monastery. Of the buildings on the territory of the monastery were only a wooden temple in honor of John the Theologian and monastic cells.
Seven years later, the monastery received its farmstead in Arkhangelsk. But both he and the monastery were lost in the 1920s. The monastery was revived only in October 4, 2012 by the decision of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church. The abbess was appointed nun Mitrofania (Mikolko).
