Russian Arctic National Park in Arkhangelsk
d. Arkhangelsk, Avenue of Soviet Cosmonauts, 57
Description:
The Russian Arctic National Park is a unique environmental complex that preserves the biological diversity of the Arctic landscapes of the Novaya Zemlya archipelago. The main territory of the park lies on the North Island and small islets located near its shores. In addition, the park is managed by a natural reserve in Franz Joseph Land. The park was established in 2009 and is one of the youngest Russian national parks.
The territory of the park is a natural habitat for a colony of polar bears. The water area belonging to the park includes a significant part of the habitat of the bowhead whale and narwhal. On Franz Josef Land there are large rookeries of Atlantic walruses and Greenland seals, as well as significant colonies of Arctic birds - gags, black Cossacks and cairos.
Since the territories of the Russian Arctic are located on islands, it is impossible to reach the national park by road or rail. The most comfortable way to visit the park are sea cruises to the archipelago on icebreakers or yachts. The administration plans to organize access to the park by helicopter. In addition, you can visit the park as a volunteer on a scientific expedition.
