Arkhangelsk

Lutheran Church of St. Catherine

d. Arkhangelsk, Karl Marx Street, 3

Description:

Since the middle of the XVII century in Arkhangelsk lived numerous foreign merchants, most of whom were Dutch and Germans. In 1683, the first Lutheran parish was founded, which was part of the evangelical-reformed parish of Moscow with a pastor from Germany. The first was Pastor F.L. Schrader from Hamburg, who laid a wooden church and began to hold services. Later, a stone church was built, which has survived to this day.

Numerous urban fires led to a constant change in the appearance of the church. By the end of the XIX century, after another restoration, a bell tower decorated with a Gothic spire appeared next to it. A large canopy over the entrance was added to the western part, and an altar apse decorated in Art Nouveau style appeared on the eastern side. After the October Revolution, the community did not have enough funds to maintain the building and it was transferred to the executive committee under the governor. In 1983, the former church was adapted for a chamber concert hall with an organ, but with the possibility of holding services.

Today the Lutheran Church of St. Catherine is the chamber hall of the Pomeranian State Philharmonic. Here you can hear classical music, visit the service, which is held, as before, in German.
