Holy Lake

Russia, Arkhangelsk region, the city of Emetsk

Description:

Lake Holy or angular is located near the village of Emetsk, ten kilometers from the Antoniev-Siisky monastery. This beautiful northern lake with clean water is revered among Orthodox Christians.

There are many legends associated with the lake. They say that once there was a pagan temple. At this place, St. Anthony of Si, who was looking for a place for the construction of the monastery, met a fisherman who pointed to the Great Mikhailovsky Lake, where the bell ringing sometimes came from the desert shore. That's where the monastery was founded. And on the shore of the Holy Lake, the Monk Anthony laid the Holy Cross Church.

There is an ancient tradition to make a procession from the walls of the monastery to the Holy Lake. The history of these processions begins in 1627, when St. Anthony appeared to the peasant Ian Tyrydanov in a dream, commanding him to go with many people to the angular lake and pray there. Since then, the procession has been held annually on the tenth day after Easter. In recent years, this tradition, interrupted by the Soviet regime, resumed.

The people of the Holy Lake have long been attributed healing properties. When the Church of the Exaltation of the Cross was destroyed on the shore of the lake, a cross was erected by believers near the ruins of the temple. The cross was destroyed several times, but each time it was rebuilt. It stands on the shore of the lake to this day.
