Monument to donors of the war years

d. Arkhangelsk, Prosp. Lomonosov, 311

Description:

The opening of the monument to donors of the war years took place several years ago at the building of the regional blood transfusion station. During all the years of the war, more than 20 tons of donor blood were transported from here to military hospitals and directly to the front. Blood was donated by almost all residents of the city. In wartime, the cities were mostly women and old people, so the weaker sex was able to help others fight and win the war.

For donated blood, donors received bread cards, lunch and hematogen, which were made directly at the station. Almost five hundred thousand women received the title of Honorary Donor of the USSR, and 43 people were awarded orders and medals. Today there are about 90 donors living in Arkhangelsk. This phenomenon never became widespread and voluntary, despite numerous patriotic and civic programs.

The monument was installed at the blood transfusion station’s own funds to once again emphasize the importance of donation even in peacetime. It may be silly to remind the obvious, but your blood can save someone's life.
