Monument to the Solovetsky Youngs
Description:
In Arkhangelsk a few years ago, a monument to the Solovetsky Jungs, who died during the Second World War, was opened. Young radio operators and helmsmen fought on ships of all fleets and flotillas of the country, although they were not even twenty years old. In Soviet times, there were only two Jung Schools: the Botsman School on Valaam, which was the first to be baptized in battle and sent by the entire team to the front, and the Solovetsky School of Young, which trained children for warships.
Unlike the Valaam school, whose 4,500 pupils almost all died in the first attempt to break through the besieged Leningrad, the Solovetsky School of Jung was established two years later at the height of the war. Solovetsky youths were a group of street children in the training detachment of the Red Banner Baltic Fleet. Until the decisive moment, they served on auxiliary ships, but in recent years, when there was a shortage of personnel on boats, almost all were sent to fight on combat boats.
