Monument "Tyulen - the savior of the inhabitants of Arkhangelsk and besieged Leningrad"
d. Arkhangelsk, Northern Dvina embankment, between K.Marks Street and Svoboda
Description:
After the siege of Leningrad, Arkhangelsk was the second city in terms of hunger mortality. Despite the fact that tons of food for the war-torn country passed through its port, the city starved. In the first two years after the declaration of war, 38,000 people died in Arkhangelsk. At the celebration of the 65th anniversary of the Great Victory in Arkhangelsk, an unusual monument to the one who saved the city during this difficult time appeared.
On the embankment of the northern Dvina there is a monument to the “Salvator of the inhabitants of Arkhangelsk and besieged Leningrad”. During the Great Patriotic War, he saved the northerners from starvation, when in the city there was a rate of bread delivery per person of only 125 grams. In the summer of 1942, a group of Arkhangelsk high school students went to Novaya Zemlya to find eggs and carcasses of kaira on the island rocks to get at least some food for the residents. Adults hunted seals. The meat was sent to Arkhangelsk and the nearest settlements. Part of the already tiny provisions went along the Road of Life to besieged Leningrad.
After the victory, it was decided to put a monument to this animal, but the construction was postponed for several decades. Part of the money was allocated by the city budget, part was donated by the residents themselves. Today on the embankment stands a half-meter bronze seal on a light pedestal, which symbolizes ice.
