Arkhangelsk

Monument to the Victims of Intervention

Arkhangelsk, the embankment of the Northern Dvina

Description:

On the embankment of the Northern Dvina, a memorial obelisk was installed in memory of the victims of the intervention in the North in 1918-1920. It was erected on the mass grave of 49 heroes of the resistance who died in the armed struggle of the workers and peasants against the landowners and capitalists for state power.

As throughout the country in Arkhangelsk there was a split into "white" and "red", which became the cause of fratricidal war. The city was divided into two militant camps, whose situation was aggravated by the intervention of the Entente military forces. By the time of the outbreak of World War I, when the Russian army was suffering enormous losses, the Soviet government could not prevent the outbreak of an anti-Bolshevik uprising and the landing of Anglo-French-American interventionists in Arkhangelsk on August 2, 1918. But gradually resistance against the interventionists began, several uprisings occurred in the white troops, and reorganized units of red partisans actively acted.

In all districts of the Arkhangelsk region, memorials and monuments of these years have been preserved. Monument to the Valiant Defenders of the Soviet North 1918-1920 is one of them.
