River Onega

onega River, Arkhangelsk Region, Russia

Description:

The river begins from Lake Lacha. It flows along the plain, but in some places it forms wide streams that reach 450 meters. In some places, the river narrows to 40 meters, in the narrowest places rapids are formed. At the beginning, it flows from the north, around the city of Peace. Near the villages of Jarnem and Desert, the river cuts through the Wind Belt Mountain. At 75 kilometers from the mouth, Onega is divided into two parts: Malaya Onega, which goes on the left side, and Big Onega, which runs on the right. Then Big Onega and Small Onega merge again into one river. Near the city, the river enters the Onega Bay of the White Sea. Further, it is divided by the island of Kiy into two arms: Karelian and Dvinsky.
