St. Ilyinsky Cathedral

d. Arkhangelsk, st. Ilyinskaya, 10

Description:

The construction of St. Ilyinsky Cathedral refers to the beginning of the XIX century. In 1809, the temple was consecrated by the Archangel and Kholmogorsk Bishop. In 1944, the question of assigning the status of a cathedral to the Ilyinsk Church was raised. By that time, all the cemetery churches had already been united under her leadership and the largest church at that time was given the status of a cathedral.

Since its foundation, the temple has undergone several major repairs after the desolation and destruction of the revolutionary years and the original decoration has not survived. To date, only two main shrines of the temple have survived. The remaining icons, the main Ilyinsky and the small Sorrow iconostasis are designed in the Baroque style of the early XX century, which is very rare in the North.
