St. Nicholas Temple
Theatre Per., 3, Arkhangelsk, Arkhangelsk region
Description:
St. Nicholas Church is located in the city center, on the embankment, and its high golden dome can be seen from afar. It is a little less than a hundred years old, but it is one of the favorite and most beautiful churches of Arkhangelsk. It is one of the youngest temples that survived the revolution. His heavenly patron Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker protected him during the most terrible years in the history of Russia.
Once N.S. Khrushchev visited the city and noticed that the colored facade of the temple looks too bright, as a result of which the unique decoration and external painting were painted with political correct gray paint. In this form, it stood until the mid-90s and only by the 2000th anniversary of the Nativity of Christ in the St. Nicholas Church completed the main restoration work.
St. Nicholas Church is quite unusual. High lancet windows are decorated with openwork grilles, stone pattern and bright color painting are restored on the walls. Inside the temple is very bright, because its altar is oriented not as usual to the east, but to the south. By the time the reconstruction was completed, the temple was presented with a magnificent gilded iconostasis made of linden by Ukrainian master carvers. The temporary wooden belfry was restored and 14 bells were installed on it. The main bell weighing 530 kilograms was hung on August 29. All of them are made in the city of Tutaev according to ancient technology, which distinguishes Tutaev bells with a low bass sound.
