The railway bridge across the Northern Dvina
Russia, Arkhangelsk region, Arkhangelsk
Description:
Severodvinsky Bridge connects the city center of Arkhangelsk and the left bank of the Northern Dvina River. This is the first bridge to be built across the main riverbed.
Construction of the bridge began in early 1958 and was completed six years later. The length of the bridge is 800 meters, and the distance from the bridge to the water is 28 meters. The bridge has a very important industrial and transport value: it has a two-way road for cars, one railway track and a path for pedestrians. The bridge’s complex movable structure allows tall vessels to pass through.
Severodvinsky Bridge is the northernmost bridge in the world with a movable structure. The bridge has repeatedly undergone major repairs, due to its solid “age” and wear of the structures.
Local residents gave the bridge the second name - "old", as in the area of Krasnoflot island opened a new bridge.
