Arkhangelsk

Museum of Artistic Development of the Arctic named after A.A. Borisov

Address: Arkhangelsk, St. Pomeranian 3

About the company:

For several centuries, since the advance of the Russian state to the North, Arkhangelsk has always been a gateway to the Arctic. From here, more than three hundred expeditions went to study and develop the northern seas and lands. The last of them - on the expedition ship Mikhail Somov - left the Northern Dvina in 1999. From here the Northern Sea Route was laid. From here he went to Novaya Zemlya and A. A. Borisov. His museum aims to perpetuate the artist’s name and contribute to the revival and maintenance of this Arctic mission of our city. About the explorers of the Arctic Nansen and Amundsen knows the whole world. And about Borisov, the first artist who mastered the Arctic, even his countrymen know little. The son of a peasant of the Krasnoborsky district, a wonderful artist, a student of I. Shishkin and A. Kuindzhi was the first in the world to work with a brush and palette in the most difficult conditions of the Arctic. His paintings were the most valuable material for many Arctic explorers. More than 60 works by A.A. Borisov are in the Tretyakov Gallery. The Arkhangelsk Museum of Fine Arts has a unique collection of works by A. A. Borisov, which includes more than 400 of his works. Here are stored now and almost all the works with which Borisov in the early XX century triumphantly traveled through the cities of Europe and America. The concept of the museum is extremely interesting in design and has no analogues in the world. The Museum of Art Development of the Arctic is not just another art gallery – it is an interactive art, cultural, educational and educational center. In addition to the halls with the works of Borisov and the works of his contemporaries - comrades in the workshop of Kuindzhi, visitors have the opportunity to get acquainted with the art of the Nenets people and the historical exposition with maps of sea voyages of Borisov, Nansen, Amundsen, Sedov, Rusanov and other polar explorers. The museum has an Arctic Center - a place of exchange exhibitions, international events, meetings, concerts; and the Northern Living Room - at the same time a lecture hall, a computer living room, and a meeting place for spectators with artists, polar explorers, scientists. A separate hall is intended for the painting by A. A. Borisov “August midnight in the Kara Sea”. So always showed this epochal canvas by the author himself. The Museum of Artistic Development of the Arctic is part of the State Museum Association “Artistic Culture of the Russian North”.
