The museum was founded in 2005 and is located in the historical building of the former railway office built in 1898, part of the architectural ensemble of the Nyandom station, which appeared due to the construction of the Vologda-Arkhangelsk railway section by the Moscow architect L.N. Kekushev. Since 2019, the museum has the status of “Notable Place”.
The local history museum collects information about the history of the city of Nyandom and the Nyandom district, organizes exhibitions (the museum objects fund - more than 4,000 pieces), museum classes and holidays, conducts excursions on the tourist routes of the city and the Nyandom district.
