The Great Silk Road is the oldest trade road connecting East Asia with the Mediterranean, a unique phenomenon that influenced the history of development of all the territories through which its routes ran. Trading caravans, overcoming great distances, arranged stops, turned into caravanserai and settlements, which eventually grew into cities.

Caravan routes of the northern branch of the Great Silk Road passed through the territory of the modern Astrakhan region. Over time, the Astrakhan region turned into a real trade gateway between mysterious China and rich Europe. On this land moved caravans with precious fabrics, furs and spices, salt and fish, overseas wonders and other exotic goods.
During the late Middle Ages, Astrakhan, a city that arose at the crossroads of ancient caravan routes, continued to play a prominent role on the Great Silk Road, becoming one of the major centers of trade between the Caspian countries.
