Description:
The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin in Astrakhan is an active Catholic cathedral, the construction of which was started in 1762. The temple was solemnly consecrated in 1778. At the moment it is included in the federal list of objects of cultural heritage of the peoples of the Russian Federation. Located at the address of Astrakhan, str. Victory, 4.
The Catholic Church of the Assumption appeared in Arkhangelsk at the turn of the 15th-16th centuries. At that time, the city was the only Russian international port, and many foreigners from Catholic countries lived in it. The church was wooden and located on the territory of the Trinity Monastery. She was a Capuchin. Later she passed to the Jesuits, and after their expulsion from Russia, Alexander I began to be patronized by the Order of St. Francis (Franciscans).
The modern building of the temple is a unique monument of Russian architecture. It combines traditional Russian architectural elements with elements of European Baroque and Classicism. In fact, the temple is a classic Italian basilica, but its central part is made in a quadrangular shape (four), which is typical for Orthodox Russian cathedrals.
