The Cathedral of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God

Russia, Astrakhan region. Astrakhan, Chekhov St., 10A.

Description:

The Church of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God is located in Astrakhan. Its history began in the XVII century, although in our days there is a completely different building. Over the past 4 centuries, 3 temples have changed. The first, in which the icon was originally brought to get rid of Marina Mnishek, was built of stone.

Then, in 1769, construction was completed near the Kutum River. There was built a wooden temple, which stood for about 30 years and which due to the dilapidated structures was dismantled. Further, construction was under the leadership of Makarii Abezyanin, a merchant who miraculously recovered from the plague. Large sums were donated to them, but in the mid-60s of the XIX century there was a major fire, partially destroying the building. Thanks to the parishioners, the building was gradually restored, but it was quite cramped and did not accommodate all its visitors on holidays and Sundays.

The current temple began to be built in 1903 and opened in 1907. In Soviet times, the temple lost its decoration and returned to the hands of the church only in 1991. After a long period of restoration, the building regained its former appearance by 2008. Nowadays, the temple pleases its parishioners, located at the address: Chekhov Street, 10
