Unique city of Azov

Azov is the oldest city of the Don region. In 2022, the city celebrated its 955th birthday. Azov has a rich history. The famous traveler and scientist Thor Heyerdahl said about the city, keeping traces of the presence of many peoples: "You have no idea what land you walk on." It is from Azov that the military glory of the Russian Navy begins. In honor of the capture of the Turkish fortress of Azak-Azov and the opening of the country's exit to the Sea of Azov, the famous ship Azov, commanded by the famous Russian navigator Mikhail Lazarev, received its name. In the old part of the city there is a fortress rampart, which offers a magnificent view of the Azov port and the Don delta. At the rampart, you will get acquainted with one of the most interesting pages of the struggle of the Cossacks with the Turks, the so-called “Azov Siege” – the heroic defense of Azov by the Don Cossacks, unprecedented in the history of the Middle Ages. Not far from the rampart is a monument of military engineering art of the XVIII century powder cellar. Inside the cellar is a diorama showing the assault of Azov by the army of Peter I. In the very center of the city there is a Historical-archaeological and paleontological museum-reserve. His hallmark are the skeletons of giant ancient animals: dinotery, trogonterian mammoths, unicorn (rhinoceros-elasmoteria) and bison. The pride of the museum collection is the exposition “Treasures of the nomads of Eurasia”, it is products made of gold and silver from the III millennium BC to the XIV century AD. There are no analogues in the world.
