Historical information about the city of Balaklava

Balaklava is one of the most ancient cities of Crimea, located on the southwestern coast of the peninsula in a picturesque bay surrounded by high cliffs. During its centuries-old history, the city belonged to different states and peoples, was a major trading port, a military fortress, a fishing settlement, an arena of fierce battles and a secret naval base. Today Balaklava is one of the most interesting historical and tourist places of Crimea.

Ancient history

The history of Balaklava dates back more than 2,500 years. Thanks to the convenient, deep and almost completely hidden from the sea bay, this area has attracted seafarers since ancient times. The narrow winding entrance makes the bay almost invisible from the sea and well protects ships from storms and strong winds.

Scientists believe that the first settlements here existed in the VIII-VII centuries BC. At that time on this territory lived the tribes of the Taurians - an ancient people who inhabited the southern coast of the Crimea. They were engaged in fishing, hunting, agriculture and maritime trade.

Balaklava is associated with one of the most famous legends of the ancient world. Many historians suggest that it was here that the harbor of lestrigons was described by the ancient Greek poet Homer in the poem “Odyssey”. According to the work, huge giants-lestrigons attacked the ships of Odysseus as they entered the narrow bay. Although there is no direct evidence of this version, the unusual shape of Balaklava Bay fits well with the description of the ancient author.

Antiquity

In the VI-V centuries BC on the coast of the Crimea began to appear Greek colonies. Balaklava Bay became a convenient parking lot for merchant ships traveling between the cities of the Black Sea region.

The Greeks actively traded with the local population, supplying wine, ceramics, jewelry, fabrics and weapons. In exchange, they received grain, fish, salt, animal and slave skins.

Later, the territory entered the sphere of influence of the Bosporan Kingdom, and then the Roman Empire. In the II century AD, the Romans placed a military garrison here to protect the sea routes. Archaeologists have discovered remains of fortifications, coins, ceramics and weapons, confirming the presence of the Romans.

Middle Ages

After the collapse of the Roman Empire, Balaclava repeatedly came under the rule of various states.

At different times it was ruled by:

  • Byzantine Empire;

  • Khazars;

  • Polovtsy

  • Mongols;

  • Principality of Theodoro.

In the XIV century on the coast of the Crimea appeared Genoese merchants from the Italian Republic of Genoa. They turned Balaklava into an important trading center of the Black Sea region.

To protect the harbor, the fortress of Chembalo was built in about 1343-1357. It was located on the top of Mount Castron and consisted of the Upper and Lower City, surrounded by powerful stone walls and towers.

The fortress controlled the entrance to the bay and protected trade routes. There were warehouses, barracks, residential buildings, administrative buildings and a church.

Today, the ruins of Chembalo are the main historical monument of Balaklava.

Ottoman period

In 1475, the Ottoman Empire seized Genoese colonies in Crimea. Balaklava received a new name – Balyk-Juve (“fish nest”) or Balyklava, from which later the modern name of the city was derived.

The Turks fortified the fortress and placed a garrison here. The bay continued to be used as a military and commercial port. The main occupations of the inhabitants were fishing, shipping and trade.

Ottoman rule lasted more than three centuries.

Entry into the Russian Empire

In 1783, after the annexation of Crimea to the Russian Empire, Balaklava became part of Russia.

By decree of Empress Catherine II, the Balaklava Greek Infantry Battalion was created here. It was based on Greeks who moved from the Ottoman Empire. The battalion guarded the southern coast of Crimea and the state borders.

In the XIX century Balaklava gradually turned into a cozy seaside town. Fishing, viticulture, ship repair and trade developed.

Crimean War

One of the most important events in the history of Balaklava was the Crimean War of 1853-1856.

After the landing of the Allied forces of Great Britain, France and the Ottoman Empire, Balaklava Bay became the main base of the British fleet.

On October 25, 1854, the famous Battle of Balaklava took place nearby.

It was here that the legendary Attack of the Light Cavalry Brigade took place - one of the most famous events in British military history. Due to the mistransmitted order, some 670 British cavalrymen attacked well-fortified Russian positions. Despite the huge losses, this attack became a symbol of the courage and dedication of the soldiers.

During the war in Balaklava for the first time widely used military railways to supply the army. From the bay to besieged Sevastopol, the British built a railway line that greatly accelerated the delivery of food, weapons and ammunition.

Late XIX - early XX century

After the war, Balaklava gradually recovered.

At the end of the XIX century, famous writers, artists and representatives of the Russian intelligentsia began to come here.

In different years, Balaklava was visited:

  • Alexander Kuprin;

  • Anton Chekhov;

  • Ivan Bunin;

  • Maxim Gorky;

  • Lesya Ukrainianka.

It was here that Alexander Kuprin wrote a series of famous essays “Listrigon”, dedicated to the life of local fishermen.

During this period, tourism actively developed, hotels, cottages, boarding houses and a promenade were built.

The Revolution and the Great Patriotic War

After the 1917 revolution, Balaklava became part of Soviet Russia.

During the Great Patriotic War, the city was in the center of fierce battles for Sevastopol.

From November 1941 to July 1942, Soviet troops heroically defended Balaklava and the surrounding heights.

After the capture of the city by German troops, many buildings were destroyed.

In May 1944 Balaklava was liberated by Soviet troops during the Crimean offensive.

During the war, the city suffered serious destruction, but after the Victory was completely restored.

Secret submarine base

After the war, Balaklava acquired strategic importance.

In 1953, the construction of a unique underground complex inside the Tavros mountain began. A top-secret facility was created here - a base for repair, maintenance and shelter of submarines of the Black Sea Fleet.

The complex included:

  • an underground shipping channel;

  • dry dock;

  • repair shops;

  • weapons depots;

  • arsenals;

  • staff shelter.

The object was designed to withstand a direct nuclear attack.

For decades, Balaklava was a closed city. It was absent on many maps, and it was possible to get here only by special passes.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the base was closed.

Today in its premises there is one of the most unusual museums in Russia - a museum complex dedicated to the history of the submarine fleet and the Cold War.
