Baltiysk

Baltiysk, Baltic Spit: On the edge of the country

Description:

Baltiysk is the westernmost city of our country, located 45 minutes drive from Kaliningrad. Today it is a large port and the largest naval base on the Baltic Sea. Warships, submarines and messengers of peaceful life, tame white swans, inextricably coexist with each other. The history of the city begins in the XIII century. During its existence, Baltiysk came under the control of various states several times. Prussians and Danes, Poles and Swedes, French and English, Dutch and Germans, Russians – all of them created the history of Pillau-Baltic. During my excursion you will see an ancient fortress, the Pillau citadel, an old lighthouse that has seen many ships from different countries over its centuries, monuments to Peter the Great and his daughter Queen Elizabeth Petrovna. You will walk along the historic embankment, take a walk far into the sea along the famous Baltic moles, offering magnificent views of the sea, the Baltic Spit and a beautiful wide coastline. Even the sea in Baltiysk differs from the local resort towns with its belligerent severity. I remember the times when the city was closed to foreigners and we, the locals, often had to get passports at the checkpoint at the entrance to Baltiysk.
