Karakol lakes are one of the most attractive places in the Altai Mountains. The lakes are located in the upper reaches of the Karakol River (a tributary of the Elikmanar River) in the prealpine part of the western slope of the Iolgo Range. The absolute height of the lowest of the lakes is 1820 m, the highest - 2097 m. Karakol lakes are a system of 7 lakes connected by channels and streams with different colors of water. The decoration of the lakes is the surrounding landscape: a cedar forest with an admixture of larch, smoothly passing into meadows. The temperature of the lake water in summer is only about + 7 C. Around the lakes are bizarre rock ensembles, some of them even have their own names, for example, “Castle of mountain spirits”. There are small caves, waterfalls. Karakol lakes are declared a natural monument.
The water part of the route is the most popular route in the Altai, children from 14 years old can take part in it, accompanied by adults. The route will introduce you to the most abundant river of the Altai Mountains - Katunya and passes along its middle current (thresholds "Ilgumen", "Shabash", "Kadrinskaya Pipe", "Teldekpen"). Insurance for passing thresholds will be provided by experienced instructors. The Katun River (translated from the Altai "Kadyn" - hostess) is the largest river of the Altai Mountains. It originates on the southern slope of the Katun Range near Mount Belukha (4506 m) from the Gebler glacier at an altitude of about 2000 meters. The length of the river is 688 km. When merging with the Biya River, the Ob River is formed.
