Belgorod State Museum of Local History is one of the oldest cultural institutions of the region. It was opened on October 25, 1924, initially as a branch of the Kursk provincial museum. Initially, the museum was located in the premises of the former men’s Trinity Monastery. In a short time, the museum funds were formed, numbering about eight thousand units at that time.
During the Great Patriotic War, fascist occupiers destroyed and looted all museum values. Only after the war, the collection of exhibits began again. The museum resumed its work on August 5, 1948 in the house number 42 on Frunze Street.
In 1964, the city museum received the status of a regional museum. On October 22, 1973, the museum opened to visitors in the building of the Transfiguration Cathedral. In 1991, the cathedral building was returned to the Orthodox Church, and the museum was transferred to a new purpose-built building (architect V.V. Vishnevsky). In January 1994, the exposition “Memory Returning the Past” was opened. The exhibits presented on it acquaint with the unique monuments of nature of the region, the diversity of the animal and plant world, illuminate the history of the region from ancient times to the present. The museum currently has more than 160 thousand exhibits.
