The city is located on the Tom River (tributary of Zeya), 108 km from Blagoveshchensk. In 1860 peasant settlers founded the village of Alexandrovskoye. In 1926 it and the nearby Bochkaryovo railway station on the Trans-Siberian Railway (founded in 1913) were transformed into the city of Alexandrovsk-on-Tomi. In 1931, the city was renamed Krasnopartizansk, then in 1936 it received the strange name Kuibyshevka-Vostochnaya, and finally in 1957 its current name Belogorsk.
