In the very south of the Russian Altai, at the junction of the borders of China, Mongolia, Kazakhstan and Russia, at the foot of the majestic Tabin - Bogdo - Ula, surrounded by rocky mountains, the Ukok plateau stretches.

Here at an altitude of more than 2000 m stretches like an oasis. The vast valley is located almost in the center of an immense mountainous country. On all sides, it is blocked by impregnable rocky mountains, and it is not easy to penetrate the plateau. Only difficult passes connect Ukok with the outside world. The plateau belongs to the few territories of the Southern Altai that have undergone less changes since ancient times, and therefore preserved the landscape structure of the ice age in a slightly changed form.

From here originate such large Siberian rivers as Bukhtarma and Ak-Alaha, carrying their waters to the Irtysh and Katun.

Ukok is rich in beast and fish. Here you can find not only a bear and a wolf, a fox and a marmot, marala and roe deer, but also an exotic snow leopard, a Siberian Capricorn and a black vulture.

The harsh and wild beauty of these places amazes those who first got here, because until recently the Ukok plateau was a closed zone for tourists.

The towering community of Tabyn - Bogdo - Ula fascinates the eye. This is the most powerful mountain complex of glaciation in Siberia, many times superior to Belukha. Here are the largest glaciers of Altai. At its top, the borders of three states converge – Russia, Mongolia and China. In the array stand out five main peaks of flat and domed shape. The main of them is Mount Nayramdal (Kyityn 4374m) is the second highest in the Altai.

“Five Holy Mountains” – according to legend, this name was given by Genghis Khan, admiring the grandeur of the icy peaks shining in the sun.

On Ukok were discovered hundreds of different types and cultures of archaeological monuments, including funerary, cult, settlement complexes, rock paintings, stone geometric calculations, deer stones and ancient Turkic statues.

The most interesting sites discovered and studied in Ukok are perhaps the mounds of the Pazyryk culture with permafrost. They preserved magnificent unique objects of plastic and decorative and applied art from wood, felt, fabric and leather, whose age is 2.5 thousand years.

For archaeologists, the Ukok plateau will remain a white spot for more than a decade and, for decades, will attract travelers, striking the imagination with its unique beauty and truly fabulous landscapes, forcing them to return here again and again.
