Gorki, Moscow region, Russia

Description:

One of the main attractions of the resort of Borodino is a monument to the great commander-in-chief of the Russian army - Mikhail Illarionovich Golenishchev-Kutuzov. The monument was erected in 1912 to the 100th anniversary of the battle, it was built at the expense of the state treasury under the project of the famous engineer P. A. Vorontsov-Veliaminov.

On the back of the structure there is a memorial plaque with a text stating that it was from this place that the glorious warrior M. I. Kutuzov led the troops on the day of that very general battle. On the face of the monument, a sword sparkles with golden overflows, which is pointed upwards - it is a formidable warning to the conquerors.

The date of the battle is inscribed on the handle of the sword, and a little below is a niche with an amazing bronze bas-relief, in the center of which M. I. Kutuzov is sitting on a camp bench, who gives another order to his loyal soldiers. To his left is depicted commander-in-chief M. B. Barclay Tolly, and behind him is a bold West Cossack.
