The Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God

Russia, Bryansk region, Bryansk, territory of Tolstoy Park and Dynamo Stadium

Description:

In memory of the stay of Peter I and Alexander I in Bryansk, a stone Christmas church was built by order and at the expense of the local merchant A.A. Baev. It was built on the site of a wooden cemetery church by an unknown architect and is a columnless domed temple in the style of late classicism. In the niches at the entrance were plaster, covered with black varnish busts of Emperors Peter I and Alexander I, which have not survived.

After 1840, according to the project of architect Bogdanov, the western porch of the church was rebuilt into a two-storey refectory, connecting the temple with the previously detached bell tower, which also has not survived to this day.

In 1927, the temple was closed and used as a morgue. Later, the cemetery was demolished, and in its place a stadium was built and the city garden was laid out, and the church was converted into a gym. In 1947, a number of window openings were laid, the facades partially acquired new decor. In 1955, the architect A. E. Pevtsov, instead of the head of the church, put a square belvedere with columns, distorting the original appearance of the temple. It was subsequently taken down.

In the early 1990s, the church was transferred to the church community, reconstructed and repaired. Now it is protected as a monument of church architecture of regional importance. On September 19, 2005, on the day of the patronal feast of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God, the first liturgy was celebrated in the church.
