Pokrovsky Cathedral

d. Bryansk, Pokrovskaya Gora, 2

Description:

The Church of the Intercession, located in the historical center of the city - on Pokrovskaya Hill, was built as a cathedral church in the XVII century at the expense of the Bryansk landowner Evstrat Timofeevich Alymov instead of the old wooden church. The temple was cathedral, then parish, more than once rebuilt and was reconstructed. In Soviet times, the temple served state needs, the bell tower and the central head were lost. In the 1970s, the building was restored, but only at the end of the XX century did the church again become a place of regular worship.

Now the azure domes of the temple create a solemn and joyful atmosphere. With the general traditional scheme of volumetric construction, the architecture of the monument has a number of interesting features. Its four chapters are not located in corners, as was usually done in Russian churches, but are oriented to the cardinal points.

Here the traditions of the XVIII century are intertwined with new “Naryshkin” techniques of the turn of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The building is brick, covered with smear. The decoration of facades is very picturesque. In the interior, the main rooms in both floors are connected with the refectory and the altar with one or three openings. The refectory lower and upper, lower church, as well as altars are covered with box vaults, the upper church with a closed vault with a light drum in the center.
