Spaso-Grobov Church
Russia, Bryansk region, Bryansk, Lenin Avenue, 98
Description:
The Savior Grobov Church is one of the most beautiful Orthodox churches in the city. It was built in 1904 at the expense of the church chief merchant P. S. Mogilevtsev and replaced the old wooden church standing nearby. The author of the project was the Bryansk architect-artist N. A. Lebedev, who designed the church in the neo-Russian style. In the chronicle of the Savior-Grobov Church, it is mentioned that the temple was built on the burial place of the Bryansk bishops Nektarius and Nathanael.
That is why the church is called Spaso-Grobovskaya, or - "the church that is on the tombs of the lords."
In 1929, the church was closed and its upper part destroyed. Inside the temple were arranged ceilings with various offices, punched new windows for the first floor and other violations of its architectural appearance. For a long time in the temple there was a morgue, then the House of entertaining science and technology. In 1985, to celebrate the millennium of the city, the church domes were restored. In December 1992, the church was transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church and began operating in 1993. A year later, for the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, the interior of the church was restored, after which the church was consecrated by Archbishop Melchizedek of Bryansk and Sevsk.
