The Church of the Assumption of the Most Holy Mother of God

d. Cheboksary, Konstantin Ivanov Street, 1B

Description:

The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin is one of the important architectural dominants of the old city, a valuable monument of Russian provincial architecture of the middle of the XVIII century, the only two-storey three-chaired, pillarless temple in Cheboksary. The stone church was built in 1763. The chronicle of the church for 1867 indicates that there is a legend that the church was built at the expense of the Moscow merchant Dryablov.

Three Sees: Assumptions of the Most Holy Mother of God, St. Boris and Gleb, Mt. Glyceria.

The main temple was cold, the chapels were warm, the temple had one big head.

According to the chronicle of the church for 1867 in the first half of the XIX century. at the expense of the landowner Kudryavtsev was built a bell tower, which was the most striking example of classical architecture. This bunk bell tower was demolished in 1930.

In Soviet times, the temple was closed and it was converted into a local history museum, and its bell tower served as a fire station tower. In the years of the struggle against religion, the complex of buildings of the Assumption Church, which developed throughout the XIX century, suffered significant losses: the bell tower was destroyed, as well as the papert and bypass galleries, a stone chapel, the western gate with a forged openwork grille and other office premises designed by the famous Kazan architect F. Malinovsky.

The latest loss is connected with the preparations for flooding of the reservoir of the Cheboksary HPP, when the first floor with a warm temple in the name of the holy martyrs Boris and Gleb was filled.

Currently, the interior of the temple is resumed. Of the modern icons of special attention deserves a rare iconography "Indrinkable bowl" Y.A. Bubnov.
