yaroslavsky Square, 1, Chelyabinsk, Chelyabinsk Region 454000, Russian Federation
About the company:
The construction of the opera and ballet theater began in 1937 on the site where the Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ, demolished after the Bolsheviks came to power, once stood. The opening of the theater was supposed to take place in 1941, but the war broke out. During 1941-1948, the Kalibr plant was located in the theater building, evacuated to Chelyabinsk from Moscow. As a result of industrial activity, the building was badly damaged and required serious reconstruction.
In 1948, the factory moved to a new building, and soon began reconstruction, which lasted until 1955. In those years, the building was very different from the modern one. There was no lush pediment decorated with sculptures, the columns in front of the entrance were smaller and they had a different shape. The reconstruction lasted for a year, and the theater opened with the premiere of the opera “Prince Igor”.
The next reconstruction of the building was carried out in 1980-1983, and it gained its modern appearance. Laminated decorations in the auditorium and foyer were covered with gold leaf, replaced chandeliers and chandeliers, more grandeur and pomp appeared in the decor. Nowadays, the Opera and Ballet Theatre is one of the most popular places of cultural recreation and the pride of the residents of Chelyabinsk.
