Monument to Kurchatov I.V

ooh Forest Park, Chelyabinsk, Chelyabinsk region, Russia

Description:

The monument to the famous academician-nuclear scientist I.V. Kurchatov, who discovered the fission of the atomic nucleus, was opened in 1986 for the 250th anniversary of Chelyabinsk. The memorial is installed at the intersection of Lenin Avenue and Lesoparkova Street, near the building of South Ural State University.

The author of the project is sculptor V.A. Avakyan. The composition of the monument includes two pylons with a height of 27 meters and a statue of Kurchatov located between them on a pedestal. The height of the monument together with the pedestal is 11 meters. The hemispheres on the pylons symbolize the split atom. Initially, the atomic core of the monument was equipped with special aircraft searchlights, which were to illuminate the monument and the adjacent territory. But due to technical problems, this design only lasted a few weeks. In 2006, the lighting of the monument was restored and supplemented.
