Kodar Ridge

Kodar Ridge, Trans-Baikal Territory, Russia

Description:

Kodar is a mountain range in the Russian Federation in the center of Transbaikalia, on the square of the Transbaikal Territory. It is included in the Stanovoye Highlands system and is a continuation of the North Mui Ridge.

The length of the Kodar ridge is about 200 kilometers, and the maximum height is 3072 meters (called the BAM peak). The ridge consists of granite-gneiss and crystalline shales. There are deposits of copper and coal.

On the ridge there are about 30 glaciers with a total area of up to 19 square kilometers.

On the slopes of the ridge grow larch forests, which at an altitude of 1600 meters are replaced by birch forest, which even higher passes into alpine meadows and tundra.

With the construction of BAM, the Kodar area became more accessible. There are settlements nearby. Not far from them is an interesting object - a desert called Charsky Sands.
