Lake Balan-Tamur
Balan-Tamur, Republic of Buryatia, Russia
Description:
Balan-Tamur is a lake located in the Amut basin in the north of Buryatia. It is located on the territory of the Jergin Reserve. It is a natural extension of the Barguzin River and is connected by a channel with Lake Churikto. At the bottom of Balan-Tamur there are many large granite blocks, and only at the confluence of the Barguzin River there is sand brought by the river. By its origin, Balan-Tamur is a tectonic lake, although scientists do not exclude the action of glaciers.
The lake has a sacred significance. In ancient times, a pillar of prayer was erected on the shore.
It is believed that the reservoir was named after the Evenki shaman Bolon-Tumer, who lived according to legend on the hill near the lake.
On the shores of the lake there is an otter, and in winter there are herds of forest reindeer. In the lake there are fish such as taimen, flax, garius, nalim, river minyan and others.
