Apple ridge
Russia, Trans-Baikal Territory
Description:
The apple ridge is located in the central region of Transbaikalia. The relief of the 650-kilometer massif is mainly medium-mountain, the slopes of the mountains, composed of crystalline slates, granite rocks, sandstones, overgrown with forests. The highest point of the Apple Range is the Kontalak char, the top of which rose to 1706 meters.
The slopes of the ridge with the “botanical” name of Yablonova are covered with larchs and pine trees, rare fir and fir trees, and at an altitude of 1300 to 1400 meters, the forest is gradually replaced by mountain tundra. But where are the wild apple trees – after all, they, according to some, gave a beautiful name to the mountains? No, apple trees do not grow here, and this etymological version is wrong. The name comes from one of the passes of the ridge - "passage, passable pass." In Buryat, it sounds like "yabalan dabaan." This combination was later re-voiced in the more familiar Russian ear "Apple Range".
