Yekaterinburg

1905 Square

ooh Volodarsky, Yekaterinburg, Sverdlovsk region, Russia

Description:

The central part of the city of Yekaterinburg is the Square of 1905. Previously it was called Trade, then Central, Main and Cathedral. The main decoration of the square, in the pre-revolutionary period, was the Cathedral - the Epiphany Church. It was distinguished by its majesty - the bell tower went high into the sky and reached 66 m in height.

The beginning of the XX century was marked for the square by the erection of various monuments, which befell a sad fate. In 1906, a monument to Alexander II was erected: a cast-iron figure of the tsar on a marble pedestal, and in 1917 it was demolished by soldiers - revolutionaries. On an empty pedestal erected a female figure with a torch in his hands. She was succeeded by the father of communism, Karl Marx. In 1920, a monument to Liberated Labor was erected on the pedestal – it was a naked figure of a man, nicknamed “Vanka naked”. But for a long time he did not "get used to it."

The cathedral was blown up in 1920. In its place, tram lines were laid and a tribune of granite was built. A monument to Lenin was erected on it.

At the moment, the entire area is covered with paving stones, and the “face” to the square is the administration building, which is topped with a tower with a spire, a chime clock and a ruby star. The facade is decorated with bas-reliefs with the faces of Reshetnikov, Sverdlov, Mamin-Sibiryak and others.
