Description:
Ural Federal University named after the first President of Russia B.N. Yeltsin (UrFU) is the official name of the Ural State Technical University since 2010. It was established on October 19, 1920. The basis for the creation of a new educational institution was the Ural Mining Institute of Emperor Nicholas II, established in 1914. Most of the students and teachers of the old university (including the rector P.P. von Weimarn) evacuated in July 1919 to Vladivostok together with the troops of Kolchak, in connection with which the question of continuing its activities was acute. The new university opened on January 8, 1921.
Today, the university is one of the leaders in the field of education in the Ural region. In the cities of the Yekaterinburg region, several branches of the university have been opened, students study at 12 faculties, and have their own sports facilities. Among the outstanding graduates of the university is the first President of the Russian Federation B.N. Yeltsin.
The main building of UrFU was built in the period from 1929 to 1939 under the leadership of architects Chernyshev, Utkin, Babykin, Wolfenzon. The building is a cultural monument and is protected by the state. The main building of the university, the building of the Institute of Physics and Technology and the building on Mira Street, which houses the Higher School of Economics and Management, were built in the 30-40s of the last century in the style of Soviet neoclassicism.
