Place of power of Kalmykia - "Lonely Poplar"

Khurul "Syakyusn Sume"

The tour begins with a visit to the very first since post-Soviet times Khurul Syakyusn Sume. Khurul is located six kilometers from the capital of Kalmykia, near the village of Arshan.

The official name of this religious building is “Geden Sheddup Choikorling”, which in Tibetan literally means “Holy Abode of Theory and Practice of the Gelug School”, and in free translation – “Holy Abode of Enlightened Monks”.

“Syakyusn-Sume” is the embodiment of Kalmyk architecture and Tibetan traditions. The temple is a twenty-meter two-storey building with a superstructure in the form of a two-tier pagoda. The building stretched twenty meters in length, nineteen in width. The central place of the first floor of the “Syakyusn Sume” is occupied by an altar and an almost four-meter statue of Buddha Shakyamuni, covered with gold.

Lonely Topol (20 km).

This poplar among the Kalmyk Buddhists is considered a sacred tree (Place of Power). It is surrounded by 8 Buddhist stupas. Every year there is a large prayer service of monks from the Central Khurul. Here is one of the 10 in the world Kalachakra Stupa - Stupa Kalachakra Green Tara, the only one in Russia and Europe.

The lonely poplar is really a real attraction that needs to be visited. It is believed that the poplar was planted by a Buddhist monk at the beginning of the last century. Returning from a pilgrimage to Tibet, he brought with him poplar seeds, which were in the incision of the road staff. This staff monk buried on the highest point of the local hill and soon on this place rose poplar sprout.
