Kazan Cathedral of the city of Elista

Kazan Cathedral (Elista) is an Orthodox church, the main religious monument of Kalmykia. The temple was built in 1996, consecrated on June 7, 1997 by Patriarch Alexei II. Before the construction of this building, there was a small Orthodox church in the city, but almost nothing remained of it as a result of a fire in the late XIX century, except for a few icons.

The cathedral is built in the late Baroque style - a single-domed octagonal structure with a rotunda, on top of which there is a cross. The entrance of the church is decorated with columns from all sides, and above the entrance there is a bell tower with seven bells. The cathedral contains the relics of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, Innocent, the Apostle Timothy, a capsule with earth from Jerusalem, an icon of the Kazan Mother of God, as well as the icon “The Appearance of Jesus Christ to Prayers” written in 1946.

Every year, on November 4, according to the state law, Kalmykia celebrates the Day of the Kazan Cathedral.
