Sculpture "Keedya"

Julia Neumann Street, Elista, Kalmykia, Russia

Description:

The Keedya sculpture is one of many small street statues that adorn the streets of Elista, the capital of Kalmykia. The sculpture is located in the heart of the city, near the city market.

Keedya was created in 1996 specifically to participate in the international competition-biennale, which was just held in Elista. The author of the creation was the famous sculptor N. Eledzhiev, who carved one of the characters of the popular Kalmyk fairy tale from the stone. "Keedya" depicts a cunning old man sitting on horseback on a small lamb, and the symbolic meaning of this sculpture can be learned from the fairy tale itself - Keedya represents cunning and folk wisdom, as well as a firm faith in himself and his strength.

Keedya is not considered an important city landmark, but the statue still attracts the eyes of many tourists. The sculpture looks very funny and is an unconditional decoration of Elista.
