Sostin Lakes
Russia, Republic of Kalmykia, Iki-Burul district
Description:
Sostin lakes are a large lake system located in the southwest of the Black Lands in Kalmykia. Mostly these are saltwater reservoirs, but some of them have become desalinated due to the regular flow of water from the Chogray reservoir. Sostin lakes have an important fishery importance.
The territory of the lakes belongs to the reserve of regional importance, which was established in 1994 and has an area of almost 32 hectares. Its main task is to protect the migration route of birds. In total, there are about eighty species of birds, among which cranes, curly pelicans, savkas and others.
In recent years, due to environmental problems, there has been shallowing of lakes of the Sostin system, as well as desertification in some coastal areas.
