Engels Museum of Local History

About the company:

The museum was founded on July 9, 1925, when an official decision was made to establish the Central Museum of the Volga German Republic. The initiator of the creation, the first director of the museum was a talented scientist-linguist, ethnographer, professor of the Saratov University Georg Dinges. In the first years, an interesting collection of clothes, household items of the German and Ukrainian population of the republic, ancient manuscripts on the history of foreign colonies, materials on ethnography, archaeology were collected. Intensive research activities were carried out. In August 1941, after the liquidation of the Volga German Republic, the museum was closed. Most of its exhibits were distributed to various organizations for storage and, of course, irretrievably lost.

After the end of the Great Patriotic War, the museum is reborn, but already in the status of the city local history museum. The most fruitful period was the mid-1960s. Under the leadership of the new director Evdokia Alexandrovna Bozhenko, a course was taken to build a museum based on local history work. However, a full return to classical museum work and the full-fledged construction of a museum of historical profile, such as it was in the 1920s, became possible only in the early 1990s. In these years, the museum for the seventh time in its history moved to a new spacious building. Now comes a new stage of development. The beginning of this work was laid in the mid-1990s under the leadership of director S. I. Spiridonova, when active attempts are being made to professionally revive the museum.

Today, the Engels Museum of Local Lore is one of the most notable and popular cultural institutions of the city of Engels. It is located in the very center of the city on the banks of the Volga near the city square, the park and the embankment, which makes visiting the museum attractive for visitors. Having extensive exhibition and exposition spaces, the museum conceptually does not limit itself to conventional frameworks and actively builds a model of a new museum adapted to modern life. Along with traditional exhibitions on the history of the region, exhibitions on contemporary art are opened here, historical and literary associations work, various events are held from excursions and classes to conferences and festivals. The museum is actively working to popularize regional history through publishing and project activities, actively cooperating with city and interregional organizations.
