Surb Khach Monastery

old Crimea, Crimea, Russia

Description:

The monastery complex of the Armenian Apostolic Church is the monastery of Surb Khach, which means “Holy Cross”. According to legend, in the middle of the XIV century the monastery was founded by the spiritual leader of the Armenians of Crimea Hovhannes Sebastatsib. He saw a huge fiery cross on the site of the monastery and regarded it as a sign from above, which prompted him to build a temple.

The monastery survived everything: the rule of Genoa, the rule of the Turks, the rule of the Golden Horde and the Russian Empire. All these years it was the spiritual center of the Armenians of Crimea, the guardian of faith and traditions. In Soviet times, the monastery was completely deserted: its walls were destroyed, wonderful fountains with bizarre stone carvings no longer gave the cleanest cool water. And only at the beginning of the two thousandth monastery again gathered believers under the roof of its central temple.

Today, Surb-Khach is a whole complex of buildings surrounded by the virgin old Crimean forest.

Surb Sarkis Temple is a medieval landmark. This Armenian church in Feodosia impresses with its beauty and is considered one of the oldest in its territory. Inside it is painted with frescoes that were destroyed after the flooding of 1970. But there is still a preserved font with chic stone carvings.

Before the construction there is a belfry consisting of massive connected pillars with arches and a cross vault. To get there and see the ancient landmark, there is a shuttle taxi No1, 2A, 14 in the city. After leaving the transport, it is enough to go through the Morsad Park.
