St. Nicholas Temple
Russia, Gelendzhik, Arkhipo-Osipovka, Lenin St., 123a
Description:
Of course, the decoration of the famous resort of the Krasnodar Territory - Archipo-Osipovka - the old Nikolsky temple. The temple was built in 1906 on the initiative of the Cossacks living in these parts. The construction was carried out at the expense of state funds and donations from the local Orthodox community.
As for many Christian shrines with the advent of Soviet power for St. Nicholas Church came hard times.
The state policy pursued at that time and aimed at the separation of Church and state actually led first to the closure of the temple, and in the thirties to its almost complete destruction. Church utensils, bells and icons were flooded in the Black Sea near the shore. The temple buildings were nationalized and for a long time were used as warehouses and a grocery store.
The restoration of the Nikolsky temple began only in 1992. The scale of the restoration is truly amazing. The bell tower and the main dome were rebuilt. On the basis of archival materials and old sketches, the iconostasis was reconstructed, the choirs, the sacristy were restored according to ancient drawings. A huge contribution to the painting of the temple was made by the painter V.S. Sukhorukov.
After the restoration, the temple is identical to the original ideas of the founders.
Nowadays, at St. Nicholas Church, a school known far beyond the Gelendzhik district operates. The temple is constantly visited by pilgrims. In 2006, the centenary of the temple was celebrated.
