Gorodets

Travel to Gorodets (car and walking program)

Description:

The city is a truly extraordinary city. What is its peculiarity?

The oldest city of our region was founded in the XII century (about 50 years earlier than Nizhny), and this event was a turning point for Russian history. The fact is that having built a new city, the princes of North-Eastern Russia began an active conquest of the left bank of the Volga. Until then, our ancestors, colonizing the Great Russian Plain, did not go beyond the right bank of the famous river.

In the next century, Gorodets became the center of a rich specific principality. In 1263 it became famous as the city where Grand Duke Alexander Nevsky met the last hours of his earthly life. Very important events took place here, both political and cultural. And in 1408, as a result of another Horde ruin, the city actually ceased to exist. But after two centuries, it was able to revive, but not as a fortress city, but as an important fishing center. So, the first feature of Gorodets is that it is one of the rather few Russian cities with two historical centers.

On the whole territory of the vast Balakhninsky district, which included including the lands of the modern Gorodetsky district, many masters of shipbuilding have lived since ancient times. Beautiful wooden ships of local production even during the reign of Tsar Peter the Great, people called "rasshimi". They decorated them with elegant “deaf” wood carvings. But after a century, iron steamers replaced the sewers. However, this fishery, fortunately, did not disappear, because from the middle of the XIX century, local wealthy homeowners began to decorate their residential and household buildings with this carving. Traditions of "deaf" (or "ship", as it is also called) wood carving residents of the Nizhny Novgorod region were able to preserve. We will see the best examples of it in the city! This is the second reason to visit this city.

And finally, the third feature. Town dwellers lived very well in the XVIII and XIX centuries, built beautiful stone and wooden houses. However, Gorodets in pre-revolutionary times remained a trading village. It could not become a city with straight streets. The streets are narrow and crooked, as in the village. But the development here is the envy of many not only county, but also some provincial cities! This gives Gorodets a special merchant flavor.
