Old Town - Gorodets

On the high right bank of the Volga River, 70 km from Nizhny Novgorod, is the ancient Russian city of Gorodets.

It was founded in 1152 by Prince Yuri Dolgoruky.

And for its centuries-old history Gorodets many times stood in the forefront of historical events. He experienced two Mongol-Tatar invasions, Prince Alexander Nevsky died here, from here came Prokhor, a companion of the great Andrei Rublev. This city was visited by Peter the Great and Catherine the Second.

Picturesquely located on steep mountains and ravines Gorodets has preserved many ancient, wooden houses, richly decorated with intricate, wooden, urban carvings.
