Russia, Nizhny Novgorod region, Gorodets

Description:

Gorodetsky Feodorovsky Monastery, according to available historical data, is the oldest in the Nizhny Novgorod diocese. It is believed that it was founded by Prince Yuri Dolgoruky, presumably in 1154. Feodorovsky Monastery is famous for the fact that within its walls in 1263, having taken tonsure and schema, the great Russian commander and patriot Prince Alexander Nevsky died.

The monastery for all the time of its existence was subjected to repeated ruin, desolation, numerous restructurings, and then the complex was used for other purposes, its buildings were destroyed.

In 2009, the restored main temple of the monastery was opened - the Church of the Feodorov Icon of the Mother of God. Especially revered in Russia, the ancient list of this icon is today the main shrine of the monastery.

At present, the ancient tradition of the procession has been revived in Gorodets.

The monastery has a museum.
