The Blue Pearl of the Caucasus. Lake Kesenoy- Am
Description:
Lake Kesenoy-Am. The Greatness of the Nature of Chechnya
Among the harsh mountain ranges of the Chechen Republic, like a precious sapphire, the high-mountain lake Kezenoy-Am sparkles. Its crystal clear waters, surrounded by majestic slopes, beckon with its pristine beauty and rich history. It is not for nothing that this amazing place is also called the “Andean Sea” – its scale and splendor amaze everyone who has ever seen this blue pearl of the Caucasus.
Situated on the border of Chechnya and Dagestan, at an altitude of about 1869 meters above sea level, Kezenoy-Am is rightfully considered the highest mountain lake of this size in the North Caucasus. Its origin is shrouded in legends and scientific theories. It is believed that about 1000 years ago a powerful landslide blocked the valleys of the rivers Harsum and Kauha, giving birth to this picturesque basin filled with pure glacial water.
The size of the lake is impressive: the length reaches 2 kilometers from north to south and up to 2.7 kilometers from west to east. The coastline is winding and stretches for about 10 kilometers, hiding cozy coves and rocky slopes. The depth of Kezenoy-Am is still a mystery, but according to the most conservative estimates is at least 72 meters, and some researchers say more depth.
The water in the lake is striking with its transparency and rich blue color, due to dissolved minerals. Even in the summer months, the water temperature rarely rises above +18 °C, which makes bathing rather a test for the most seasoned. However, this coolness preserves the crystalline purity of the water surface, in which, as if in a mirror, the surrounding mountain peaks are reflected.
Kezenoy-Am is not only a natural attraction, but also a unique ecosystem. Here lives a rare species - Eisenam trout (Salmo ezenami), endemic lake, listed in the Red Book of Russia. In the vicinity grow rare species of plants, including healing black cumin, and in the sky you can see the beautiful butterfly of Apollo, also under protection.
About the origin of the lake locals pass from generation to generation a beautiful legend. It tells the story of an ancient village, standing on the site of a lake, whose inhabitants have forgotten the laws of hospitality. The wrath of heaven fell on the village in the form of a flood, and only a good widow was saved, who sheltered a wanderer who turned out to be an angel.
Today, Kezenoy Am is experiencing its rebirth as a popular tourist destination. Sports and tourist complex, built on its banks, offers comfortable accommodation and a variety of outdoor activities. Here you can take a fascinating boat or catamaran walk, enjoying the serene surface of the water and the majesty of the surrounding mountains. Fans of hiking and horseback riding will find many picturesque routes around the neighborhood. Fishing on the lake is also possible, but with the obligatory observance of environmental regulations.
A visit to Lake Kezenoy-Am is an unforgettable journey into the world of pristine beauty and grandeur of Caucasian nature. This is a place where legends come to life against the backdrop of crystal clear water and harsh mountain landscapes, leaving in the heart of every tourist a piece of the blue pearl of Chechnya.
