Description:
The construction of the second Orthodox parish church was planned in Khvalynsk since 1826, but it was opened only in 1849. The project of a stone church with a bell tower was compiled by the provincial architect G. V. Petrov, the thrones were consecrated in honor of the Exaltation of the Honest and Life-giving Cross of the Lord (main) and in honor of the Nativity of the Forerunner and Baptist of the Lord John (in the aisle). Around the temple over time grew a lively cross-exaltation Square. On November 26, 1877, the parish guardianship was opened, on February 18, 1891, the first students were accepted by the parish school, which moved to a new stone building in 1905. In 1910, the temple was painted by Kuzma Sergeyevich Petrov-Vodkin. The artist also got married in the Church of the Cross. After the revolution, the church continued to function for some time. In the spring of 1931 it was transferred to the club of the Union of foodies, at the same time the bell tower lost its domes. Since 1936, a granary was located within the walls of the former temple, 10 years later the building was dismantled. According to the resolution of the Saratov Regional Duma of November 17, 1994, the temple building was recognized as a newly identified object of historical and cultural heritage. In 2009, large-scale repair and restoration work was started. On September 27, 2014, Metropolitan Longin of Saratov and Volsk in the service of the clergy performed the rite of the Great consecration of the temple.
