Monk's Cave
Saratov region, Khalynsk, Khvalyn National Park
Description:
The monk’s cave was built at the end of the XIX century by monks for a solitary life on the opposite slope of the ridge bordering the Cheremshan gorge from the south. The place of the cave is picturesquely located in the upper reaches of the ravine below at the foot is the village of Podlesne. In good weather, the cries of roosters, the moo of cows come here. Here the village women brought food for the elders. The cave consisted of two rooms: one in the depths for prayers, rest, and the other, closer to the exit, had a household purpose. In our time, the last room is destroyed and washed away by rain streams, left far, but it is almost completely filled with washed clays. The last elder, monk Seraphim, lived there already at the beginning of the XX century. He was remembered by local residents as a good healer - he knew how to treat herbs.
